CRESTON — The new Creston-Dement Library construction project is on hold for now, Creston Village Board President Tom Byro said. 

The library gave the board the news at its Tuesday meeting. The decision is due to current high costs of labor and materials. 

“Because of costs, the library has decided to wait a year,” Byro said. “Most of their money is from grants. They’re going to hold off to see what happens with the economy.”

Byro said the new library project has been in motion for “a couple of years.” Earlier this year, the land planned for the new library at the intersection of Main Street and Cedarholm Street was brought into the village. 

The new library is a $2.5 million project. Donations can be made to the project by mail, in-person at the current library or online at crestonlib.org. 

“It’s a big deal,” Byro said. “They’re crammed into a building downtown now. It’s going to be great.”

Booster Days

Byro said Creston Booster Days is currently planned for Aug. 27-29 after it was canceled a year ago due to COVID-19. 

“It’s good to get people back into the swing of things,” Byro said. “Getting that back will help the community and get us back to a normal summer in our little town.”

Water meters

Byro said the board tabled the issue of new water meters in Creston. 

“We’re looking at different ways to go,” Byro said. “You have to have fancier water meter readers now. Our equipment is outdated and we need new ones and we’re looking at ways to do that.”

Cleanup day

Dement Township Cleanup day will be June 12 and 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the township facility.
