Hub Project summer school program set

Program preparing for most ambitious summer yet

ROCHELLE — The Hub Project Summer School is expecting a large turn out this summer.
According to director Amy Hayden, the program will be June 7 through July 2 at Lincoln School. It includes incoming first grade through eighth grade students and transportation will be provided. Incoming kindergartners participate in drop services.

Each day begins at 8:15 a.m. with breakfast and dismisses at 11 a.m., Monday through Friday. Hayden explained that classes Monday through Thursday will have an academic focus, while Friday classes are set aside for enrichment.

“We are thrilled to resume in person services for the Hub Project this summer.  Our teachers and staff have some engaging activities for our students that will help get them prepared for the next school year,” added Hayden.

2021 Summer Hub Specifics

To meet student needs due to the impact of COVID, District 231 has nearly doubled the length of programming in terms of the number of days and the academic minutes in each day.

They also doubled our student capacity. In the past, there were roughly 110 kids. This year, Hayden said, they are planning for 250. This will include students from all elementary buildings and Rochelle Middle School. Again, this is to help meet the increased number of students in need of academic support.

The project also anticipates a high amount of interest for Summer Hub, so they’re working from an invitation process to ensure the kids with the greatest needs placed first. They’ll work with classroom teachers and building principals to establish those lists and then will begin to reach out to families after spring break.

The same Covid-19 protocols of masks and social distancing will be followed as they were during the school year

“We are excited to have the ability and opportunity to provide the most ambitious summer school experience our district has ever offered our students,” said superintendent Jason Harper.
