ROCHELLE — Talk about smashing goals.

Rochelle Township High School Band Director Ron Duval said the fundraising goal has been met — and then some.

The Hubs Marching Band was chosen to represent Illinois in Washington, D.C. in the “2018 Parade of Heroes — A Monumental Salute to the Veterans,” which will honor those who served during the three pivotal periods in the history of the U.S.; World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of WWII.

Thursday before the band was set to march in the Homecoming Parade, they gathered in front of the high school near the sign indicating the “thermometer” reached over 100 percent.

Duval shared a comment, and at times was visibly moved by the community’s outpouring of support. He admitted the intentions were to garner corporate support mainly, but in true Rochelle fashion the community embraced it wholeheartedly — from individuals, community groups and organizations.

Former RTHS band director Harry Roderick will draw the winning ticket during halftime of Friday evening’s homecoming game.

“This community has stepped up beyond what I ever expected…it’s overwhelming,” Duval said, choking back emotions. “To go out on a limb, a leap of faith to sell 1,000 tickets for a car and to have them sold out two weeks ago is amazing.”

The band will embark on their trip to the nation’s capitol on Thursday, Nov. 8 after school and will get back early on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The group will honor area veterans for the school’s annual Veterans Day breakfast.

“Everything is falling into place…I’ve had phenomenal parent support. The kids are incredible…that’s why I keep teaching. I can’t say enough about them and I can’t say enough about the parents,” Duval added. “The Veterans Breakfast at the high school is the culmination it all. We go out to honor the nation’s veterans, but then we end it back home.”
