ROCHELLE — There were no injuries after a fire at a home in Steward on Monday afternoon, Rochelle Fire Department Lt. Zach Prewett said.

Fire crews were called to 207 Miller St. in Steward on Monday at 2:05 p.m. for a report of smoke and fire at a two-story, single-family residence. The first crews on scene reported moderate smoke coming from a second-floor window and saw a small amount of fire in an exterior wall, Prewett said.

“There was fire on both floors on exterior walls,” Prewett said. “The first crew was able to extinguish most of it before we arrived and ran a hose line in there and extinguished it the rest of the way. All fire was confined to the exterior wall. All occupants were home at the time of the fire and they were able to get outside safely. We were able to get two pet cats out safely as well.”

Responding departments were Rochelle Fire, and the Ogle-Lee Fire Protection District stations of Steward, Creston and Flagg Center.

The residents of the home will be displaced for a time due to the fire and The Red Cross was contacted to help them. Prewett said RFD estimates the amount of damage to be $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but was “possibly electrical in nature,” Prewett said.

Fire crews cleared the scene at 4:27 p.m.
