No injuries in detached garage fire Tuesday in Creston

Creston fire chief: Cause of fire unknown

CRESTON – Jeannette Young and her husband were in the middle of dinner when she noticed smoke coming from her unattached garage outside.

Creston, Steward and Rochelle Fire Departments responded Tuesday to the fire at 5:07 p.m. at 304 E. South St. in Creston and found smoke and fire coming out of the south door. Creston Fire extinguished the initial flame and crews spent the rest of the time searching the garage for hotspots.

Creston Fire Chief Curt Ward nobody was in the garage at the time of the fire and that the homeowners called it in. He said the cause of the fire was unclear and it would be investigated.

“Our crew hit it mainly from the outside at a safe distance,” Ward said. “Now the only hazard is if something falls or someone slips. It was a pretty simple fire from our end.”

Young said her husband was able to get their car out of the garage after they noticed the fire.

“We have lawnmowers and stuff in there, but not much of value,” Young said, “The response was very fast from fire departments. I just thank God everybody is OK.”
