ROCHELLE — The Flagg Township Museum will present a reception for the new exhibit “Franklin Kruger Remembered” at the museum on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. The exhibit currently is on display and continues through May.
The museum is pleased to be able to put together the “Franklin Kruger Remembered” exhibit showcasing Kruger’s artwork currently in the museum’s collection. In addition, information highlighting the influence Kruger had on the community as an art teacher at Rochelle Township High School for more than 25 years, a community activist developing a series of newspaper drawings in the mid-60s, a history researcher resulting in numerous articles and his efforts that resulted in the establishment of the Historical Society and the Flagg Township Museum are a part of the exhibit.
In a letter to the editor of The Rochelle News-Leader (date unknown) for the newspaper column “SPEAK UP! A Column Where You Can Express Your Views,” Kruger wrote, “I would like to suggest a few names for the beautiful new park area located northwest of Rochelle and along Kyte River. I am especially interested in the area because I have done landscape painting and also historical research in and near the area.” Kruger goes on to suggest three names, none of which to our knowledge were selected.
Maybe a reader can enlighten us all as to what this park was named. The editorial is just one example of many that Kruger submitted for publication over the years.
The “Franklin Kruger Remembered” exhibit continues at the museum through May.
The mission of the Flagg Township Historical Society and Museum is to stimulate interest in Flagg Township history through education, research, collection and preservation of information for the benefit of the public of today and in the future.
