The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors memorial at Lawnridge Cemetery, which was originally dedicated over 111 years ago on Oct. 8, 1910, was recently re-dedicated with a ceremony that recognized River Boat Pilot Samuel Humberstone. who served in the Civil War, as well as all members of the US Armed Forces who have served since the Revolutionary War.

Soldiers and Sailors memorial re-dedicated

ROCHELLE — The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors memorial at Lawnridge Cemetery, which was originally dedicated over 111 years ago on Oct. 8, 1910, was recently re-dedicated with a ceremony that recognized River Boat Pilot Samuel Humberstone. who served in the Civil War, as well as all members of the US Armed Forces who have served since the Revolutionary War.

Humberstone was visiting his sister Priscilla in Rochelle when he passed away from a stroke and was buried in an unmarked grave at Lawnridge in 1880. The late Tom Lyons and a group of Civil War reenactors marked his grave in approximately 1995. 
In attendance at the re-dedication were Revolutionary War, Civil War and World War II living history reenactors, as well as members of the Girl Scouts, the American Legion and the Rochelle Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

The ceremony concluded with the playing of TAPS. The program was Rochelle Chapter DAR member Becky Danner's capstone project as part of the NSDAR New Horizons member's leadership course.

Also attending, but not shown, are Tim Danner, Melissa Butz, American Legion Post 403 Commander John Gruben and Senior Vice Commander Charles Roberts (TAPS). 

The next meeting of the Rochelle Chapter DAR is a "Favorite family recipes potluck" with speaker State Regent Debra Ross Coe, beginning 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 at the Creston Opera House. Prospective members are also invited to attend.
