The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team finished tied for fourth place with four points in the IHSA 1A Geneseo Sectional on Friday and Saturday. Sophomore David Wanner and junior Alex Gilbert each won one singles match for the Hubs, who end the season 5-11 overall.

GENESEO — The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team finished tied for fourth place with four points in the IHSA 1A Geneseo Sectional on Friday and Saturday. Sophomore David Wanner and junior Alex Gilbert each won one singles match for the Hubs, who end the season 5-11 overall.
Gilbert began the tournament in the second round, rallying from a first-set loss and defeating Galesburg’s Keaton Empey 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Wanner advanced to the third round, where he fell 0-6, 0-6 against Dixon’s Lucas Healy. Wanner also reached the third round at the sectional meet, beating Mendota’s Trent Stramberger 6-2, 6-0 in the second round before falling 1-6, 0-6 against Newman Central Catholic’s Marvel Zhang. Both players earned first-round byes.
Juniors Jason Zheng and Devansh Patel dropped their first doubles match against Sterling’s Carter Ryan and Luke Valentino, falling 0-6, 0-6. Sophomore Owen Haas and junior Peter Forsberg faced Geneseo’s Alex Slaymaker and Mason Smith in doubles, falling 2-6, 2-6.
