SANDWICH — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity basketball team played a nearly even contest against the Sandwich Indians on Wednesday. But a difficult second quarter for the Lady Hubs was enough for Sandwich to edge out Rochelle 42-34, dropping the Lady Hubs to 1-2 overall. Junior Josie Lundquist led the Lady Hubs with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and three rebounds.
“They had a big girl who bullied us around quite a bit,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “She made a few key buckets and free throws for them and they also have a nice little guard who hit a few step-back 3-pointers. We were taking good shots but we weren’t making them… I was really happy with our shooting at the end of October. We just need to keep getting more reps.”
Rochelle and Sandwich were evenly matched over the first, third and fourth quarter, with each team scoring 29 points over those three quarters. The Lady Hubs struggled in the second quarter, however, with the Indians outscoring them 13-5 and creating enough of a cushion to outlast Rochelle in the second half. Senior Afi Gati led the Lady Hubs in rebounds with seven, while senior Sofia Lenkaitis and junior Jordin Dickey each totaled five points in the loss.
“Even though we made some turnovers because of their full-court press, I thought we handled their pressure well,” Rowan said. “We did a much better job of using our passes, recognizing when we were open and taking good shots. We’re keeping teams that can score 50-to-60 points in the 40-point range, but we need to be more physical in the post and make shots.”
