ROCHELLE — After five head-to-head matches and two tournaments on the road, the Rochelle varsity girls bowling team finally rolled on its home lanes Thursday evening, when the Lady Hubs hosted Sterling for more Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference action.

Zoey Paone recorded a team-high 616 series for the Golden Warriors with high games of 212 and 225 to help Sterling defeat Rochelle 2,759-2,073 and drop the Lady Hubs to 0-5 overall. Senior Autumn Headon finished with Rochelle’s high series score of 443 with a team-best game of 153.

“They’re making a lot of big strides and I’ve seen a lot of improvements,” head coach Joey Johanning said. “They’re putting a lot of work in outside of our regular practices we run, and it was nice to finally bowl on our home lanes. I feel good about the direction we’re headed.”

Sterling took the first game over Rochelle 952-672 behind Paone’s 212 and Olivia Zinanni’s 209. Headon led the Lady Hubs with 148, and freshman Alyssa Schwanert shot 136 while senior Aubrey Headon rolled 129.

The Golden Warriors won the second game 945-692 with Paone’s 225 and Grace Schultz’s 200. Headon rolled 142 for Rochelle, and sophomore Kiya Herrera totaled 138 with Schwanert adding 132.

“Kiya was wearing house shoes, throwing a house ball and shooting scores in the 70s and 80s about 2-to-3 weeks ago,” Johanning said. “She picked up her own equipment and she’s routinely shooting triple-digit scores now. She’s putting the work in, and she’s young so she’ll have a couple of years to grow which is exciting for the program.”

Sterling completed its sweep over Rochelle with an 862-709 victory in the third game. Paone rolled 179 and Kyleigh Glazer added 173 for the Golden Warriors, while Headon’s 153 and Schwanert’s 149 propelled the Lady Hubs. Schwanert finished with a 417 series, with Herrera shooting 377 for Rochelle. Aubrey Headon finished with a 307 series for the Lady Hubs, with senior Taylor Bearrows adding 286.

“Alyssa has taken strides forward and I believe she’s in line for a new ball which will only help her game,” Johanning said. “We’ve been working with her to have her up closer to the foul line and that’s helped her accuracy... The key for a lot of our girls is to stay focused when we’re on the lanes and to not let any outside distractions throw them off their game.”
