ROCHELLE — The Lady Hub tennis team was dominant during doubles play against Newman Central Catholic on Wednesday. Despite blistery conditions, Rochelle’s netters protected their home court with a 3-2 victory over the Comets in nonconference action.
The Lady Hubs fell behind early after Newman’s Lilliana Campell downed Rochelle junior Emma Hicks 6-0, 6-1 on the No. 2 singles court. Juniors Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young quickly evened the match, sweeping their first set in a 6-0, 6-3 win over Maddy Verdick and Brynlee Hermeyer.
“We felt really good after winning that first set,” Young said. “We rallied really well during our deuce points. Jordin and I have been friends forever and we clicked right away when we first started playing together, so we’ve been continuing to build on that chemistry. We’re going into the conference and sectional meets soon and we want to do big things there.”
Rochelle surged ahead 2-1 when senior Sawyer McGee and junior Sylvia Hasz closed out an efficient 6-2, 6-2 victory against Cecilia Sagel and Marisel Schalck at No. 2 doubles. Juniors Josie Lundquist and Megan Thompson secured the doubles sweep and the team win for Rochelle at No. 3 doubles, holding on to beat Sophia Propheter and Fernanda Reyes 6-2, 6-4.
Newman claimed the final match of the evening, with Sarah Tunink winning 6-2, 6-3 over Lady Hub senior Anna Guevara. Rochelle improved to 3-8 overall with the victory.
“We’ve been working really hard and we’ve had a lot of really close meets this season,” Lundquist said. “We’ve played really well recently and we’re proud of that… My hits have improved a lot and I’ve learned a lot more about the game and figuring out what’s happening on the court. We’re learning how to win, and this win definitely boosts our confidence.”
JV
The Lady Hub JV tennis team also defeated Newman on Wednesday, winning 6-2 on the road. Freshman Laney Hicks earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2 singles, while five doubles teams secures wins for Rochelle. Juniors Ella McKinney and Madison Ost won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Torrin Nantz and junior Liberty Hayes won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomores Abby Tarvestad and Francesca Williams edged out a 9-8 victory at No. 3 doubles, with juniors Lauren Jackson and Idaly Aguila bringing home an 8-4 win at No. 4 doubles. Sophomore Sammy Sanford and freshman Annaleigh McKinney were victorious 8-4 at No. 5 doubles.
LaSalle-Peru
The Lady Hub tennis team continued Interstate 8 Conference play against LaSalle-Peru on Thursday, falling 5-0 to move to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference. Rochelle will face Kaneland and Morris in a three-team meet this weekend.
LaSalle-Peru swept both singles matches, with Carlie Miller winning 6-0, 6-0 over Lady Hub senior Anna Guevara at No. 1 singles and Catherine Engels topping Rochelle junior Emma Hicks 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Juniors Josie Lundquist and Megan Thompson fought hard at No. 3 doubles, falling 5-7, 2-6 against Kenzie DeFosse and Lauren Phillips.
Senior Sawyer McGee and junior Sylvia Hasz fell 4-6, 0-6 against Olivia Woods and Karissa Etzenbach at No. 2 doubles, with juniors Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young falling 3-6, 2-6 against Lauren Klein and Bri Strehl at No. 1 doubles.
