STERLING — The Hubs varsity tennis team concluded its run at the IHSA Class 1A Sectional in Sterling this past Saturday, with Rochelle senior Noah Griffith taking third place in singles competition and sealing his third straight state qualification.

Griffith defeated Geneseo’s Griffin Tracey (6-0, 6-0) and Sterling’s Grant Bright (6-0, 6-2) on Friday to reach the sectional semifinals. Griffith returned Saturday as the lone Hub remaining in the tournament, and the senior took his first set against Alleman’s Joey Miller before falling in the final two sets to lose by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 1-6.

Griffith bounced back in the consolation finals with a swift 6-0, 6-0 victory over Geneseo’s Mason Miller to finish third place in the sectional competition. The IHSA State Championships in Arlington Heights will be held at Hersey High School this coming weekend.
