The Hubs varsity baseball team wrapped up its three-game series with Ottawa on Thursday, and despite falling by a score of 18-8, the Rochelle boys finished 2-1 against the Pirates this season after winning on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rochelle boys improve to 4-2 after winning conference series

OTTAWA — The Hubs varsity baseball team wrapped up its three-game series with Ottawa on Thursday, and despite falling by a score of 18-8, the Rochelle boys finished 2-1 against the Pirates this season after winning on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The Hubs are now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 West and Rochelle will play Morris at home on Tuesday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday

Rochelle jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning after junior Brandon Johnson and senior Johnny Kisner singled to begin the frame before junior Johnny Beck singles and junior Hayden Jones doubled for two RBIs. Senior Noah Mershon also singled in the first.

The Hubs talled four additional runs in the second inning beginning with a solo home run by Brandon Johnson with one out. Kisner singled and Beck doubled before junior Cody Johnson notched a two-RBI hit to the left side. Jones added an RBI single, and sophomore Gavin Ansteth collected a single as well. Rochelle led Ottawa 8-5 after two innings, as the Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

However, the remainder of the game was all Ottawa, with the Pirates totaling 13 unanswered runs to swing Thursday’s game in their favor. Ottawa added two runs in the third inning to make it an 8-7 game before tying the game 8-8 with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hubs walked 10 Ottawa batters in the game, and the Pirates took full advantage of their free passes, tagging Rochelle for 10 runs over the remainder of the game and earning the victory in five innings.

Wednesday

The Hubs defeated Ottawa 14-8 in Game 2 of their three-game series with the Pirates. Brandon Johnson walked to begin the top of the first inning, and Kisner singled before Beck hit an RBI single up the middle. Cody Johnson added a double, and Jones drove in two runs on a single to the left side. Ansteth also singled in the first, and the Hubs totaled three runs in the frame.

Ottawa quickly erased Rochelle’s 3-0 lead with five runs in the bottom of the first in a rally that included two triples and four singles. Both teams failed to score in the second inning before the Hubs tied the game 5-5 in the top of the third inning. Beck doubled and scored on an RBI double by Cody Johnson, who scored on an RBI single by senior Riley Lodico.

Ottawa added two runs of its own to jump ahead 7-5 after three innings. Mershon’s three-RBI triple to right field in the top of the fourth put Rochelle ahead 8-7, and the Hubs increased their lead to 10-7 in the fifth inning on RBI singles by both Kisner and Cody Johnson.

The Pirates plated one run in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-8 score, but Rochelle iced the victory with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Jones slapped a two-RBI double before scoring on an RBI single by Ansteth. One run was scored from an error.
