MAPLE PARK — Prior to the prom festivities kicking off in Rochelle, the Hubs track and field team had some business to take care of at the 2017 Peterson Prep Invitational at Kaneland High School this past Saturday.
Rochelle landed in 12th overall out of 15 teams, with the varsity boys taking 10th place. Senior Matthew Drendel turned in the Hubs’ strongest performance of the afternoon, finishing with a state-qualifying time of 1:59.85 in the 800-meter run to win the event over East Aurora’s Ricardo Del Toro (2:02.93).
Sophomore Austin Walsh also stepped up for Rochelle in the middle-distance races, taking fifth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.55 and finishing two hundredths of a second behind No. 4 runner Jake Eberhart of Yorkville. Walsh and Drendel joined forces with seniors Lance Huftalin and Levi Johnson in the 1600-meter relay to take first place with a winning time of 3:30.36.
Huftalin also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79 to score three points for the Hubs. Senior Jake Rodriguez’s time of 17.65 in the 110-meter hurdles was good enough for 11th place, while Johnson and senior Edwin Infante finished back-to-back in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 44.08 (15th) and 44.57 (16th).
In the high jump, senior Andrew Myers cleared 6-2 to finish fourth overall and score five points for Rochelle, and fellow senior Michael Drendel’s height of 12-1 in the pole vault earned him sixth place and 1.5 points. Junior Bazil Bennett led the Hubs in the throwing events, placing 12th in the discus with a toss of 120-5.
