ROCHELLE — The Hubs varsity tennis team hosted Newman Central Catholic on Thursday for its final meet of the regular season before beginning the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Championships at Ottawa and the IHSA Class 1A Sectional in Sterling. Rochelle also celebrated Senior Night after the match, which the Hubs dropped by a final score of 3-2 to end with a 7-12 record.
Seniors Noah Griffith and Kevin Zheng dominated during singles play on Thursday, with Griffith coasting past Brady Moran 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Zheng defeating Ethan Partington 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Newman Central Catholic won all three doubles points, with Cody Bonnell and Jonathan Rhodes topping Rochelle senior Jesus Nava and junior Hector Garcia 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Newman Central Catholic’s Jake Terveer and Isaac Blaney won over Rochelle juniors Chris Jones and Emilio Nava 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles while Eli Blaney and Dean Ellorando bested Rochelle junior Diego Lopez and sophomore Sean Flanagan at No. 3 doubles 7-6(3), 6-3.
