The Hubs varsity wrestling team finished third out of roughly 20 schools at Mahomet-Seymour’s 38th Annual Marty Williams Invitational this past Saturday. The Rochelle matmen scored 410 points to edge out Metamora (409 points) for the No. 3 spot in the standings.

MAHOMET — The Hubs varsity wrestling team finished third out of roughly 20 schools at Mahomet-Seymour’s 38th Annual Marty Williams Invitational this past Saturday. The Rochelle matmen scored 410 points to edge out Metamora (409 points) for the No. 3 spot in the standings.

Senior Alex Harvey (30-0) took first place in the 195-pound bracket. Harvey won by fall over Pontiac’s Mariano Vega before defeating Byron’s Matt Wombacher by fall in the championship semifinals. Harvey then beat Richland County’s Kyle Beasley by 19-4 technical fall to claim the title.

Junior Eddie Villalobos (30-3) placed second at 145 pounds. Villalobos defeated Mahomet-Seymour’s Caleb Grove by 9-4 decision before taking down Naperville Central’s Matthew Kaszuba by 23-8 technical fall. The junior beat Normal West’s Kolton Howard (5-4 decision) and Rantoul’s Peter McCusker (5-3 decision) before falling by 4-3 decision in the championship finals to Naperville Central’s Nick Keating.

Two Hubs took third place including senior Ehren Metzger (20-4) at 152 pounds and freshman Ben Harvey (26-3) at 170 pounds. Metzger beat Mattoon’s Zach Valencia by fall before winning by fall over Richland County’s Jacob Ferguson. The senior lost to Belleview West’s Logan Johnson by 4-2 decision, but Metzger ended his tournament with an 8-4 decision over Mahomet-Seymour’s Kyle Johnson.

Harvey won by fall over both Normal West’s Peter Freymann and Mahomet-Seymour’s Daunte Roberts before picking up a 5-0 decision over Mahomet-Seymour’s Wyatt Heimann. Harvey lost to Metamora’s Xavier Gutierrez by fall, but the freshman bounced back with a 4-1 decision over Riverton’s Grant Ripperda.

Senior Justin Hernandez (27-6) placed fourth at 132 pounds. Hernandez won by technical fall over both Mattoon’s Nate Eldridge (20-5) and St. Laurence’s Jonathan Olivo (19-2) before beating Normal West’s Chad Lawyer by 4-2 decision. Belleview West’s Justin Koderhandt defeated Hernandez by sudden victory before the senior lost by fall to Metamora’s Brayden Smith.

Junior Brandon Johnson (7-2) took seventh place at 220 pounds, while senior Austin Tracey (23-11) finished in eighth place at 182 pounds. Johnson won by fall over both St. Laurence’s Sean Burns and Richland County’s Aiden Foster before falling by 11-0 major decision to Naperville Central’s Ben Cianchetti. Johnson won by fall over Rantoul’s Seth Sprandel after losing by fall to Decatur Eisenhower’s Stephon Ball.

Tracey won by injury default over Champaign Centennial’s Dawsen Wade after falling by 10-4 decision to Byron’s Colton Ingram. Tracey then defeated St. Laurence’s Donte Reed by fall before losing to both Mattoon’s Cayden Collins (3-1 decision) and Metamora’s Chris Leanos (3-2 decision).

Sophomore Bryan Garza (8-5) placed 10th at 170 pounds with wins over Manteno’s Matt Lanoue (fall) and Metamora’s Payton Cardin (4-2 decision). Freshman 120-pounder Grant Thompson (18-17), senior 138-pounder Andy Silva (6-7) and sophomore 285-pounder Charlie Jandak (6-4) each finished in 11th place. Junior Jacob Fore (9-10) placed 12th at 145 pounds with victories against Champaign Centennial’s Matt Zinchuk (fall) and Mattoon’s Derek Owens (fall).

Sophomore 126-pounder Keegan Davis (17-14), sophomore 160-pounder Gavin Ansteth (12-11) and junior 285-pounder Nick Henson (17-8) each took 13th place during the tournament. Sophomore Diego Escobar (8-9) finished 15th at 132 pounds, and sophomore Zeke Horn placed 20th at 145 pounds.
