MACHESNEY PARK — The Lady Hubs varsity tennis team opened the 2017 season against the Harlem Huskies on Monday, with the Rochelle girls fighting hard but falling by a score of 5-0 to drop to 0-1 overall.
Harlem’s Emma Garcia defeated Rochelle senior Alex Nava in No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-4), and Lilly Hardy took down Lady Hub senior Jasmin Galvan (6-0, 6-2) in No. 2 singles to record the Huskies’ second point of the match. Harlem duo Tambryn Hecox and Kendra Belisle bested Rochelle seniors Raquel Montelongo and Anahi Calderon in No. 1 doubles (6-1, 6-1).
The Lady Hubs came close to a victory in No. 2 doubles, with seniors Lillian Fulgencio and Marissa Belmonte playing two close sets with Harlem’s Autumn Lakey and Sam Flaningam but finishing just short. The Huskies took the doubles match 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), and Harlem’s third doubles pair of Amy Schellschmidt and Sinclair Drysdale took down Rochelle junior Lila Roush and sophomore Kate Monfils 6-4, 6-2.

The Lady Hubs junior varsity tennis team fell to Harlem by a score of 3-0. Jasmine Rissman and Ashlynn Leininger fell 1-8 in No. 1 doubles, while Caitlin McMurray and RuthAnne Gardner lost by a score of 0-8 in No. 2 doubles. Mindy Pelayo and Melanie Gonzalez played Rochelle’s closest set, falling 3-8.
