Rochelle Rays battle Huntley in season opener

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Rays hit the water for the first time Thursday evening, with the Huntley Stingrays arriving at Spring Lake Pool for Rochelle’s first dual swim meet of the summer.

The Huntley boys scored a total of 296 points, while the girls added 265 points for a team total of 561. Rochelle’s boys led the charge with 176 points, with the girls tacking on 152 points for a group total of 328. Swimmers between the ages of 8 and 18 suited up for both teams, with the athletes competing in 82 events spanning roughly four hours in length.

“To say the Rochelle Rays made a splash in their first swim meet this season would be an understatement,” head coach Marianne Swanson said. “As a coach, I am most pleased with the sportsmanship, leadership, and work ethic of this fine group of young athletes. We have many very gifted swimmers who swim eight weeks out of the year and compete at a high level with swimmers from teams where most of the swimmers compete year-round.”

Riley Wiegartz broke two Rochelle Rays individual records in the 13-14 boys division, finishing the 50-yard butterfly in 28.34 seconds to snap a record set in 2004 and clocking in at 1:07.99 to break the 100-yard individual medley record set in 2012. Abby Wagner set a new individual record in the 15-18 girls division, completing the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:26.13 to best the previous record set in 2008.

Wiegartz teamed up with Josh Bunger, Paul Davis and David Peterson in the 15-18 boys division to break a 200-yard medley relay record set in 2007, finishing with a time of 2:06.97. Jack Lodico joined forces with Hayden Inman, Owen Haas and Trey Taft to complete the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:22.54, breaking the previous record set in 2001.

8 & Under Girls

Jillian Bruns, Mackayla Downing, Roxy Taft and Maggie Suneson teamed up to swim the 100-yard medley relay in a time of 2:34.37. Taft took second in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 20.50, and she also placed second in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.66. Bruns clocked in at 37.04 to take fourth in the 25-yard breaststroke.

Cambrey Rodeghero finished fourth in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 24.66, and Rodeghero placed fourth in the 25-yard backstroke with a time of 33.97. Downing swam as the lone competitor in the 25-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:12.97.

8 & Under Boys

Bryson Stewart joined forces with Owen Carmichael, Charlie Carmichael and John Chadwick to finish the 100-yard medley relay with a time of 2:23.27. The four boys also teamed up for the 100-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 2:02.80.

Chadwick placed second in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 21.86, and he took third in the 25-yard backstroke with a time of 32.33. Stewart’s time of 38.44 in the 25-yard breaststroke earned him second place, and Charlie Carmichael’s time of 44.79 earned him second in the 25-yard butterfly.

9-10 Girls

Sydney Carmichael, Natalie Wagner, Emma Kennay and Erin Murphy completed the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 3:19.20 for second place, and the girls finished the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.90 for first place. Meredith Bruns took third in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 22.15.

Kennay finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 38.62, and she took second in the 50-yard butterfly (52.22) third in the 100-yard individual medley (1:53.84). Kendyl Darby placed third in the 25-yard breaststroke while taking third in the 25-yard backstroke (28.92), and Madigan Williams finished second in the 25-yard backstroke with a time of 27.71.

9-10 Boys

Parker Slattengren, Nolan Johnson, Van Gerber and Henry Hildreth teamed up to take second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:14.47. Hildreth finished first in the 50-yard butterfly (28.42) while taking third in the 50-yard backstroke (51.65) and the 50-yard freestyle (42.70). Liam Wise won the 25-yard backstroke with a time of 32.62.

Gerber took third in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 23.53, with Johnson placing second in the 25-yard butterfly (24.06) and third in the 25-yard breaststroke (30.25). Slattengren finished third in the 25-yard butterfly with a time of 28.89.

11-12 Girls

Abby Dahl, Olivia Sergeant, Adeline Morrissette and Anna Harvey finished the 200-yard medley relay in 3:05.79 for second place, and the girls took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:44.25. Harvey finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (34.54), with Sergeant winning the 100-yard individual medley (1:33.32) and taking second place in the 50-yard freestyle (36.50).

Morrissette took second in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 49.70, while Harvey (44.08) and Sergeant (45.30) took second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard backstroke.

11-12 Boys

Henry Hildreth, Owen Haas, Jack Lodico and Hayden Inman took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:52.68. Lodico placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 33.10, with Inman taking third with a time of 34.09. Haas won the 50-yard breaststroke (45.75), while Lodico (46.20) and Trey Taft (48.06) placing second and third, respectively.

Haas clocked in at 1:28.13 to take second in the 100-yard individual medley, and Lodico’s time of 1:28.75 earned him third place. Inman finished the 50-yard backstroke in 47.16 for second place, with Haas (42.68), Lodico (45.32) and Inman (46.06) going 1-2-3 in the 50-yard butterfly, respectively.

13-14 Girls

Sylvia Hasz finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 46.55 while taking fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (35.60), the 100-yard individual medley (1:33.86) and the 50-yard butterfly (45.17). Sara Johnson won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 42.65 while taking fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke (48.43). Johnson and Hasz teamed up with Morgan Haas and Zegan Paul to place second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:30.63.

13-14 Boys

Riley Wiegartz won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:03.75, and Wiegartz won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.08, while Baxter Konstans (30.72) took second. Konstans finished second in both the 50-yard backstroke (43.28) and the 50-yard breaststroke (44.44), with Max Orlikowski (1:02.23) taking third place in the 50-yard breaststroke.

15-18 Girls

Cara Forsberg, Abby Wagner, Madison Underwood and Adelyn Paul placed second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:25.56. Forsberg took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:09.00, while Wagner (1:26.13) and Grace Orlikowski (1:49.16) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Forsberg placed second in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:19.59) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:50.26), with Wagner (3:08.25) taking fourth in the 200-yard individual medley. Underwood’s time of 1:37.53 earned her fourth place in the 100-yard butterfly.

Forsberg, Orlikowski, Wagner and Paul combined to take third in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 2:14.99.

15-18 Boys

Riley Wiegartz, Josh Bunger, Paul Davis and David Peterson teamed up to take second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.89. Davis placed second in both the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.00) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.35), with Bunger taking third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.31). Peterson’s time of 1:22.40 earned him third place in the 100-yard backstroke.
