ROCHELLE — The Hubs sophomore baseball team turned in an enormous offensive performance in a two-game set with Rockford Guilford and Niles West this past Saturday, scoring 35 combined runs and picking up two more victories in the process.
Rochelle downed the Vikings by a score of 13-0 in the morning before taming the Wolves to the tune of a 22-5 onslaught. The sophomores improve to 7-2-1 on the season with the two nonconference wins.
Guilford
The Hubs did most of their damage in the first three innings, scoring 12 of their 13 runs including five runs in the second inning. Zach Bernardin notched a team-high five RBIs while going 3-for-4 at the plate, and Brandon Johnson added another home run to finish the game with two RBIs.
Johnson pitched the first three innings for Rochelle, striking out seven and walking just two. Noah Knight completed the shutout with two innings of relief work, striking out four and yielding one hit. Knight also went 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and three RBIs.
Niles West
Johnson and freshman Charlie Jandak each homered for the Hubs against Niles West, with Jandak recording four RBIs in the game and Johnson adding two while scoring four runs. Knight and Bernardin continued to do damage at the top of the batting order, combining for five RBIs and five walks.
Freshman Kaleb Hess went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and fellow freshman Ethan Etes pitched the final inning of the win for Rochelle. Louie Mancinas started the game on the mound, tossing four innings and striking out two.
