ROCHELLE — Behind a 14-2 run in the first quarter, the Hubs sophomore basketball team built a large enough lead to edge past the Sterling Golden Warriors at Rochelle Township High School Friday night, winning by a score of 68-58.
The Hubs knocked down six 3-pointers in the first half, with three coming from Johnny Beck, who scored a team-high 34 points in the victory. Kaleb Ackland connected on two 3-point shots for his six points in the game, while Noah Knight cashed in for three of his 10 points.
Rochelle led Sterling 29-22 at halftime, and despite outscoring the Golden Warriors 24-14 in the third quarter, the navy and gold mounted a furious rally to come within six points during the fourth quarter.
But it wouldn’t be enough to overturn the Hubs, however, as the purple and white buried several key free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Freshman Austin Brown sunk six of them for six of his 12 points, while Knight and fellow freshman Seth Gould, who finished with four points in the win, teamed up to make six more.
The victory brings the sophomore team’s record to 15-10 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
