Thiravong takes third place medal

ROCK FALLS — Rochelle’s Megan Thiravong stood up against some strong competition this past Saturday at the Rocket Invitational tournament.

Thiravong shot an 18-hole round of 84 on the day Rock River Golf Club to medal in third place overall.
“It was great to see Megan finish where she did on Saturday,” said Hub coach Glen Mehrings. “Her ball striking is so solid right now and even though she missed a few tough putts, she stayed within her game and didn’t let her round get away from her.”
Mehrings said the junior shows a great deal of maturity on the course and looks for some pretty impressive scores as the season progresses.

“She is really learning to keep her game in check,” he added. “She would have broken 80 on Saturday if a few putts had dropped, but what’s great to see is that she didn’t lose her round over it.”
As a team the Hubs placed fifth out of seven teams in the large school bracket with a total of 394.
Rock Falls won the event with a 344, while Geneseo was second with 346. Woodstock placed third with a 365 and LaSalle-Peru ended in fourth with a 370.
Griffin Ohlinger shot 100 for Rochelle, while Shepard Hayes carded a 104 and both Reese Kirk and Brett Ferguson each shot 106.
The top four scores make up the team total and Mehrings was pleased to see his squad finish under 400.
“Our goal is to score under 400 in these big tournaments,” he said. “We have some young players, but I am seeing improvement as they get more experience.”
