ROCHELLE — VFW moved one step closer to finishing the Rochelle Little League season with a perfect record Friday evening, defeating Firemen by a score of 17-1 in four innings of Major League action to improve to 13-0 overall. Firemen drop to 5-5 with the loss.
Three VFW players scored in the first inning including Garrett Gensler, who tossed a complete game and picked up the win on the pitcher’s mound while striking out 10 batters. Brandyn Metzger and Colton O’Rorke each scored after reaching on errors, and Erich Metzger singled to keep the threat going.
Nolan Fonfara’s walk sparked a six-run frame for VFW in the second, with Brandyn Metzger and Noah Lara singling before O’Rorke and Erich Metzger doubled to left field. Grant Gensler also singled in the inning.
Austin Davis led off the top of the third inning with a single, and Davis scored on a triple by Garrett Gensler to make it a 10-0 VFW lead. The boys added six more in the top of the fourth inning after a single by O’Rorke and a triple by Erich Metzger sparked a single by Tommy Tourdot and a double by Grant Gensler. Lara singled in the top of the fifth inning, and Erich Metzger’s fourth hit of the day plated Lara to give VFW a 17-0 lead.
Firemen earned one run back in the bottom of the fifth after Felix Schlenbecker singled to right field and was replaced by a pinch runner. But the boys in orange were unable to avoid the run limit.
Brock Metzger reached base twice on a walk and an error, while Zach Sanford also walked. Firemen put just four runners on base in the game.
