As a career advocate for community inclusion and access to critical services like health care and education, I felt compelled to highlight the work of Illinois Community Colleges across our state that empower women to pursue careers in historically male-dominated industries.

March 28, 1889 started out like most days in Ashton, local business owners were opening their stores and preparing to serve their customers.

On March 25 at 9:33 a.m. Umesh S. Patel, 49, of Elgin was cited for speeding 50 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone. He signed a promise to comply and was given an April 26 Rochelle court date.

On March 18, deputies responded to rural Monroe Center for a juvenile complaint. Upon further investigation, 18-year-old Frank J. Decena-Flores of Rochelle was arrested for criminal sexual abuse. Decena-Flores was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was detained in lieu of a court date before a judge.

Thursday evening was a successful outing for the Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team, which secured wins over Rockford Lutheran and St. Bede to open the 2024 season. 

A pair of crooked numbers from the Belvidere North offense doomed the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team during Thursday’s nonconference matchup against the Blue Thunder.

Senior Ella Alfano went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double to fuel the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team during Thursday’s season-opener against Rockford Guilford.

Tim J. Hintzsche, 61, of Byron IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, with his family by his side.

The Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team was held to one hit during a 10-0 loss against Marmion Academy on Wednesday evening.

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team kicked off the Interstate 8 Conference schedule with a road match against the Sycamore Spartans on Wednesday.

The Rochelle Township High School cross country program will have a new head coach when the Hub and Lady Hub runners lace up their shoes for the 2024 season.

United States Congressman Darin LaHood (R-16, Peoria) visited Rochelle on Tuesday, March 26 and spoke at the Rochelle Rotary Club's weekly meeting. 

On Tuesday, March 26 at the weekly meeting of the Rochelle Rotary Club, four area nonprofits each accepted $11,250 checks from proceeds of the recent From the Heart Gala that raised a record $90,000.  

This year marks the 100th birthday of the Rochelle Fire Department’s historic 1924 American LaFrance Fire Truck, affectionately known to the community as “Gertie” in parades and at the RFD Museum. 

Jason Hardin of Creston served in the United States Army from 1999-2005 and reached the rank of specialist (E4). He served during combat in Iraq as a Blackhawk helicopter crew chief/door gunner. 

How many of us are worried that the 2020 election was stolen or there was too much scandal around it?  Shouldn’t we have looked for and found various political and concerned groups trying to fix any problems that were found?  Shouldn’t we have found in the news that these groups and others were reviewing the voting processes of those areas found to concerning?  Shouldn’t we have heard something?

Since 1980, landowners in Illinois have had a tool available to them that can help preserve farmland for at least 10 years. The Illinois Agricultural Areas Conservation and Protection Act allows one or more landowners to voluntarily place their land into a protected district, often called an “ag area,” with the approval of the local county board.

At its meeting Monday, the Rochelle City Council unanimously approved a $251,984 change order for its renovation work at its 1030 S. 7th St facility. The building was purchased in recent years and was the former site of Johnson Tractor. City and Rochelle Municipal Utilities staff occupy the space and it is being fitted to their needs.

On March 22 at 12:41 p.m. Alvaro E. Mireles, 60, of Rochelle was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant and transferred.

On March 23 at 6:23 p.m. deputies, with the assistance of the Oregon Police Department, conducted a traffic stop at Hill Street and Illinois Route 2. After a brief investigation, Deputies arrested Joseph Mikeworth, 47, of Mendon, Illinois, for driving without a valid license. Mikeworth was released with a notice to appear. Mikeworth was additionally issued a citation for suspended registration.

On Tuesday, demolition of the former site of Vinny’s Barber Shop at 517 W. 4th Ave. began. The city purchased the building in October after the building had previously been condemned

On Thursday, March 21, a ribbon cutting was held for the Lincoln Arts Center at 108 S Main Street, Rochelle, the former site of Lincoln Elementary School and the recently-renovated home of the Vince Carney Community Theater. The Lincoln Arts Center is now also open for rentals and non-VCCT events. 

On Thursday, March 21, a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening were held for Runnings at 1240 N. 7th St. in Rochelle. 

There were no injuries after a fire at a home in Steward on Monday afternoon, Rochelle Fire Department Lt. Zach Prewett said. 

Local gymnast Pearson Putzstuck competed at the 2024 Illinois State Gymnastics Championships at the Adventure Commons in Bourbonnais from March 22-24.
