Rochelle sophomore Andrew Nuyen has been practicing his pole vaulting for an average of four to five hours a week since his freshman season with the Hub track and field team concluded this past year.

On Monday, March 18, we celebrated the six-month anniversary of the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act. There are few places where racial injustice was more apparent in Illinois’ criminal legal system than in the use of monetary bail.  The Pretrial Fairness Act was aimed at correcting some of those inequities and eliminated our two-tiered system of justice that routinely and systematically disadvantaged people of color, particularly Black people.

Arabella M. has been a Girl Scout for seven years with Troop 1168 in Rochelle. Her goal this year was to sell Girl Scout cookies to all 50 states. With the help of videos and photos shared to social media and all the texts and emails sent to family and friends, she achieved her goal.

On March 18 at 12:12 p.m. Justin M. Buchanan, 37, of Maple Park was cited for no seatbelt-driver, speeding 52 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone, and no insurance. He signed a promise to comply and was given an April 26 Rochelle court date.

On March 18 at around 6:53 p.m. deputies responded to Benny's Corner Market in Davis Junction for the report of a retail theft of alcohol. On March 19 at 6:20 p.m. after an investigation, deputies placed Margot Jacobson, 26, of Davis Junction, and Gerald Tyszko, 46, of Davis Junction, under arrest for retail theft. Jacobson and Tyszko were taken to the Ogle County Jail and released with a notice to appear court date.

The Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team scored its first win of the season on Thursday evening, recording 11 hits and tallying four runs in the third inning to secure a 12-5 victory over Sterling in nonconference action.

A short-handed Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team did its best to hang tough against the Sterling Golden Warriors during Thursday’s nonconference home matchup.

Lewis Blanford “Blan” Pierce, Jr., 85, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, Illinois. 

At its monthly meeting Wednesday, the Ogle County Board unanimously approved a resolution declaring Ogle County a non-sanctuary county for immigration. 

Ogle County Farm Bureau leaders are excited to call the Ogle County Board an “Ally in Agriculture” after the board’s adoption of a pro-agriculture resolution, demonstrating local elected officials’ support for farmers.

Results from Tuesday’s general primary election in Ogle County showed that Christie Cox of Polo (3,812 votes, 50.68 percent) defeated Chad Horner of Rochelle (3,709 votes, 49.32 percent) in the race for the Ogle County coroner’s office. As of Thursday afternoon, 100 percent of Ogle County precincts had reported, but results will be unofficial for two weeks following the race, which is election protocol.

On Tuesday, March 19 at the Rochelle Rotary Club’s weekly meeting, four area nonprofits accepted $11,250 checks from proceeds from the recent From the Heart Gala that raised $90,000.  

With the wind howling at its face throughout the first half, the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team fought admirably to keep the Mendota Trojans off the scoreboard Tuesday evening, when the purple and white took the field seeking its first victory of the season.

Drucilla “Peggy” May Walt, 89, of Cortland, Illinois, passed away peacefully Monday, March 18, 2024, at her home.

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team dropped its second straight match to open the 2024 season on Monday, falling in a 5-0 shutout against Stillman Valley.

On Friday, March 15, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Creston-Dement Public Library project at the corner of Main and Cederholm Streets. Board members, library employees and members of the community took part in the event. 

Freshman forward Brody Bruns saw his role become larger and larger as the Rochelle Hub varsity basketball team progressed through the 2023-24 season.

A lot has changed on our Ogle County farm since I first started helping my dad take care of the pigs over 50 years ago. Gone are the open sheds and large pens for our pigs of multiple sizes and ages — pens where they were exposed to the weather as well as disease.

At its monthly meeting Monday, the Rochelle Township High School Board of Education resolved to move forward with a future detention pond reconstruction project after hearing a report on the topic from District Business Manager Kevin Dale. 

The Flagg Township Museum will host a series of informal talks – Chautauqua – on March 25 through March 28 from 7-8 p.m. at the museum and it’s all about birthdays – birthday toys, the 95th birthday of a local organization, birthday cakes, and even ideas about how to save your birthday memories.
