Rising senior Sofia Lenkaitis found her offense from 3-point range this past season, and her proficiency from beyond the arc allowed her to lead the Lady Hubs in scoring with an average of 8.9 points per game. Lenkaitis has been on the court throughout the summer to prepare for her third varsity season, working with her AAU coaches on attacking the basket and becoming a primary facilitator for when the Lady Hubs return to action this coming winter.
An Interstate 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention this past season, Lenkaitis stepped up for Rochelle during the IHSA 3A Sycamore Regional, scoring a team-high 17 points in a quarterfinal victory over Belvidere. Lenkaitis held down a starting role throughout the season, making an immediate impact when she scored 19 points to lead Rochelle over Morrison in the Forreston Thanksgiving Tournament for the team’s first victory of the 2019-20 campaign.
“We had our ups and downs throughout the season, but I thought we did the best we could,” Lenkaitis said. “We have a lot of dedicated players on our team. I believe I did well in supporting my teammates and motivating them to do their best… One of my goals for next season is to get to the basket more and get more players involved in our offense. My AAU coaches have been working with me this summer to improve on getting to the basket. It has taken a lot of hard work, and I’ll continue to work hard and stay dedicated and motivated to improve.”
Rochelle’s Most Valuable Player and an Academic All-Conference honoree this past season, Lenkaitis will be an integral part of a varsity roster that will be looking to make significant strides after recording only 11 victories over the past two seasons. The Lady Hubs are expected to have much more experience on the floor next winter, though, and Lenkaitis is confident that she and her teammates can turn around Rochelle’s recent misfortunes.
“We didn’t have a great record, but I think we grew together and we worked very well together as the season went on,” Lenkaitis said. “I want us to try and produce a winning season next year. I thought we communicated well, but I believe we could have done better to hone our individual skills for the betterment of the team.”
