ROCKFORD — Despite some extenuating circumstances, the Hubs varsity tennis team still managed to turn in a successful day of competition at the Rockford Jefferson Invitational this past Saturday.
In what turned out to be a triangular meet between Rochelle, Newman Central Catholic and Rockford Jefferson, the Hubs took down the Comets by a score of 3-1 before winning both matches against the J-Hawks en route to a 2-0 win.
Junior Noah Griffith remained hot in the No. 1 singles spot for Rochelle, bringing home a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory over Newman Central Catholic sophomore Jacob Terveer before beating J-Hawk junior Jacob Burg to remain undefeated this season with a record of 4-0.
Junior Kevin Zheng continued his recent stretch of solid play as well, winning in three-set fashion over Comet freshman Jonathan Rhodes in No. 2 singles for his second straight victory. Sophomore doubles duo Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia picked up their first win as a team with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Newman Central Catholic sophomores Brady Moran and Kyle Yole.
No. 2 doubles pair (juniors Ozzy Fulgencio and Tyler Nalley) fell to Comet partners Dean Ellorando and Juan Brisemo, but rebounded with a win over J-Hawks Andrew MacQuarrie and Grayson Pies by a score of 8-3. The Hubs will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Geneseo.
