ROCHELLE — Hundreds of Rochelle residents gathered at Lawnridge Cemetery Monday morning following the annual Memorial Day parade to remember fallen soldiers. Members of the Rochelle VFW Post 3878 and American Legion 504 took part in the symbolic wreath laying for remembrance. Inside the wreath are flowers in three colors; white is the symbol of purity, red is the symbol of devotion and everlasting remembrance, and blue is for eternity.

Chuck Roberts provided an opening speech urging everyone to talk to veterans to learn first-hand stories. Also speaking was Lydia Roberts and Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson, speaking on the origins of Memorial Day. He also shared that 1.1 million Americans died while serving the Revolutionary War, Civil War, both World Wars, the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars, and the War on Terror combined.

Olson encouraged everyone to observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, joining the Nation in pausing and remembering those lives lost in service.

Local Boy Scouts placed carnations in honor of local veterans who died this past year on a grave representing the resting places those who served in all wars.

VFW Post 3878 Commander Bill Bumgarner honored World War II Veteran Bert Cote, the last original member of the post.

Members of the Rochelle Township High School band played the traditional American anthem.
