The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity tennis team claimed two victories on Thursday evening, when the purple and white battled against Belvidere in nonconference action.

Junior Ashley Lozano-Barragan and senior Kendyl Darby brought home the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity tennis team’s first doubles victory of the season Wednesday evening, when the purple and white took the court against Harlem in nonconference play.

On Sunday, October 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the University of Illinois Extension will host the Ogle County Farm Stroll, a self-guided driving tour of highly diversified family farms open to the public on one big day.

John E. "Sam" Stover Jr. age 87 of Rochelle formerly of Ashton passed away on Tuesday Aug. 28, 2024 at Rochelle Rehab and Healthcare in Rochelle, IL.

George W. Schmidt, 93, passed away Friday, August 23, 2024 at Manor Court in Rochelle, IL.

Harold William Julifs, 89, of Sterling, died Sunday, August 25, 2024, at CGH Medical Center after a short illness.

On Aug. 19, the City of Rochelle and the Rochelle Fire Department announced their receipt of a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant in the amount of $919,368 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that will allow for the addition of three full-time firefighter/EMTs.  

At the end of July, Rochelle Police Department Detective Sgt. John Kaltenbach retired after 21 years with RPD. Kaltenbach was recognized by the city council at its Aug. 12 meeting. 

Land, water, air and space transportation systems all consist of three main components: (1) vehicles, which enclose and protect the operators, cargo, and onboard navigation and control components, (2) Support structures, which are buildings used to service and maintain the entire system, and (3) pathways, which provide feasible travel routes for vehicles.

Labor Day began as a federal holiday to honor our nation’s workers and to remember those in the labor movement who came to their defense over a century ago. They demanded that workers’ economic contributions be recognized, and that people had safe workplaces, received fair wages and had opportunities to succeed. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland took an important step and declared the first Monday in every September since to be Labor Day. 

Junior Annaliese Koziol and freshman Tyler Johnson each earned medalist honors to lead the Rochelle Township High School varsity cross country teams on Wednesday evening, when the Hubs and Lady Hubs raced in the Early Bird Invitational at Morris High School.

Sophomore Owen Carmichael was among the young players who continued to step up for the Rochelle Hub varsity golf team this week.

The annual meeting of the Rochelle Community Hospital Association (RCHA) will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Alfano’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant.

On Tuesday morning, over 100 Chevrolet Corvettes stopped in Rochelle at the Petro Travel Plaza. 

Rochelle seniors Ali Ohlinger and Taelynn Rodeghero have seen their chemistry grow since becoming teammates with the VC United club volleyball program.

Players on the Rochelle Hub varsity golf team navigated deep bunkers and large greens during the 2024 Rocket Invitational at Deer Valley Golf Course on Saturday, when the purple and white recorded a third-place finish in the Large Division with a score of 358.

Joyce Fay Whitaker passed away peacefully Monday, August 26, 2024 at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. 

Andrew Thomas Waters, 46, passed away unexpectedly in a tractor accident Sunday, August 25, 2024 at his family’s homestead in Ashton, Illinois.

On Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office arrested Daniel Roman, 42, of Rochelle, on an outstanding warrant for driving suspended.  He was taken to the Ogle County Jail and held without bond.

On Aug. 23 at 7:15 p.m. Natanael Gonzalez-Moran, 36, of Rochelle was arrested for domestic battery and transferred.

Many years ago, I was a Republican.  At the time, I didn’t agree with many of the Democratic Party’s policies.  Yet, I didn’t hate them, nor do I remember any members of either party developing any commercials, nor giving any speeches to tear down the other party or totally trash another opponent as is being done today. 

This Labor Day is a celebration of our country’s growing embrace of a new face of leadership and opportunity. In our politics, a minority woman leads a presidential ticket for the first time. And on the frontlines of our labor movement, the “toolbelt generation” has tremendous room for growth led by women and minorities.

Joe Drought of Rochelle spent a total of eight years in the United States Army in active duty and 1.5 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He went on tours of service in Korea and Germany. 

The Rochelle Junior Tackle football teams hosted Sterling at Helms Park on Saturday, Aug. 24. The eighth-graders improved to 2-0 on the season with a 36-8 win.

Rochelle Township High School seniors Colton Czekala (football) and Taelynn Rodeghero (volleyball) were presented with the 2024 Hub Power Male and Female Weightlifter of the Year Awards during the Meet the Hubs Fall Family Night on Friday.
