Rochelle senior Cody Johnson will be an integral part of the varsity baseball team this spring.
When the Hub slugger plays his final game in purple and white, he’ll be trading in his traditional Rochelle colors for the green and white Kishwaukee College baseball uniform.
Johnson signed to continue his academic and athletic careers with the Kougars earlier this month. The senior became the second Hub over the last two years (Blake Albers) to ink his National Letter of Intent with Kishwaukee College.
While Johnson has played many positions at Rochelle including third base and pitcher, Johnson will play catcher for the Kougars.
“I’m looking forward to competing at the college level and I’m looking forward to continue playing baseball which is my passion,” Johnson said. “I chose Kishwaukee because it’s very close to home and the school has a very good baseball program. The new coaching staff really intrigued me in playing for the Kougars.”
Johnson possesses the physical attributes to be successful at the college level, boasting the ability to throw baseballs at 90 miles per hour on a crow hop while hitting balls with exit velocities over 95 miles per hour according to Rochelle head coach Jarrod Reynolds. Reynolds said Johnson’s bat speed and strong throwing arm will allow his game to translate to the next level.
“I’m thrilled that Cody will be continuing his education at Kishwaukee and playing baseball for the next two years,” Reynolds said. “Cody is a talented player with a bright future ahead of him and Kishwaukee will be a great fit… We appreciate Cody’s contributions to the baseball program these last three seasons and we’re looking forward to his senior season in a Hub uniform.”
Johnson said his strongest feature is his arm strength, and he said he wants to continue working on his blocking skills behind the plate. He said he will be studying either business management or marketing in hopes of continuing his education at a four-year school.
