NAPERVILLE — While she wasn’t able to compete during the outdoor track and field season this year, former Rochelle standout Morgan Knight still found ways to find her role and enjoy her freshman season at North Central College.
Knight may have missed the outdoor season with an injury, but she participated in four meets during the indoor season for the Cardinals, often racing in the short sprints including the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Knight set her personal-best collegiate times during the month of February, recording a time of 1:05.62 in the 400-meter dash at the ONU Invite on Feb. 2 and 28.79 seconds in the 200-meter dash at the NCC L. Fee Slick Track & Field Invitational.
“I enjoyed my first season with the track and field team because I fit in really well with my teammates and coaches,” Knight said. “They were all welcoming which made the college transition a lot easier. The biggest difference I noticed between high school and college was the new events, which I thought were interesting because I got to watch and learn different races and field events.”
Knight raced in three events during the North Central College Cardinal Opener on Jan. 11, placing third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.30 and helping her team finish second in the distance medley relay with a time of 14:38.48. The former Lady Hub athlete took eighth in the 200-meter dash at the NCC Snow Day Dual Track & Field Meet with a time of 29.13, and she helped the 1600-meter relay team place fifth in the NCC F. Lee Slick Track & Field Invitational.
“My favorite experience from the season was the team dinners in the dining hall after practice,” Knight said. “Our team was really close this season which made being injured for all of the outdoor season less awful. My goal next year is to stay healthy for the whole season and see what personal records I can get.”
Knight ended her high school career as a three-time state qualifier at Rochelle. She led the Lady Hubs to seventh in the 1600-meter relay as a sophomore before helping RTHS take third in that same race her junior season and seventh her senior season. Knight, who also played volleyball and basketball at RTHS, is currently majoring in social science and history.
“Running at RTHS helped me learn how to stay motivated through a long track and field season,” Knight said. “Coach [Kyle] Kissack and coach [Alison] Vrana taught me to focus on doing my best, which I primarily focused on this season since I was injured.”
