Junior Katherine Bakken and sophomore Santi Cordoba turned in the Rochelle cross country team’s low times when the boys and girls teams traveled to Sycamore on Tuesday for their first action of the 2017 season.
The Lady Hubs finished eighth overall in the Sycamore Invitational, with Bakken completing the 3-mile race in 20:46 for 22nd place. Rochelle put four girls in the top 50 including Bakken, senior Morgan Baker (22:17), junior Anne Hickey (22:25) and senior Claire Plapp (22:48). Baker placed 40th overall, while Hickey took 43rd and Plapp finished 49th.
“It felt really good to get back out there,” Bakken said. “It was really relaxing… We went to sectionals as a team last year and we’re hoping to make it back this year.”
Seniors Ashley Ramos (77th), Najwa Morrar (87th), junior Abby Wagner (84th), sophomore Julissa Hernandez (81st) and freshman Heidi Cruz (83rd) rounded out the Lady Hubs cross country team on Tuesday. On the boys side, the Hubs were led by Cordoba, who placed 23rd overall with a time of 15:01 in 2.48 miles. The sophomore is one of seven on this year’s squad, but the short-handed team isn’t letting youth quell their expectations for the season.
“We’re young and small but we’re really dedicated,” said Cordoba, one of eight runners on the boys team. “We just have to keep working hard and getting faster.”
Sophomore Uzziel Zarate finished 46th (15:41), while sophomores Tucker Louis (51st), Diego Escobar (62nd) and Ben Hickey (69th) followed suit. Rochelle will compete in the Oregon Open this weekend before returning to Oregon for another meet on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
