SYCAMORE — Sycamore’s Kylie Feuerbach and Rochelle’s Abby Lundquist are bound to combine for several points whenever the two Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference standouts take the floor against each other. Friday was the third installment of the Feuerbach-Lundquist series, and both girls delivered beyond expectations.
Feuerbach dominated the Lady Hubs during the first quarter Friday evening, scoring 13 points and helping Sycamore begin the game on a 19-4 run. Feuerbach finished with a game-high 39 points, and despite Lundquist countering with 34 points including 22 in the second half for Rochelle, the Lady Hubs fell 65-46 and dropped to 4-8 overall.
“Kylie knows how to use screens,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “She’s able to push her teammates into our girls which is a huge bonus. They were setting solid screens for her and we just weren’t able to get into good enough defensive positions to contest her shots. We were close, but not close enough.”
Sycamore’s full-court press flustered the Lady Hubs in the first quarter, as Feuerbach and her Spartan teammates intercepted balls through passing lanes and scored several layups at the Rochelle hoop. The Spartans backed off during the second quarter, allowing Rochelle to fight back before pushing the Lady Hubs down with more pressure in the third quarter.
“They have a very high basketball IQ,” Rowan said. “They have kids who have been around the game for a long time and you can tell they’ve spent hours in the gym. They were able to anticipate things that our kids couldn’t. I’m hoping our kids can learn to anticipate more throughout the season.”
Lundquist scored all four Rochelle points in the first quarter before adding two 3-pointers and two layups in the second quarter. The senior standout received some help from freshman Zoey Tabor, who splashed home two 3-pointers of her own while freshman Sylvia Hasz added a left-handed hook shot on the block. Rochelle cut Sycamore’s lead to 32-20 at halftime.
But Feuerbach was simply too much for the Lady Hubs, as she ran her scoring total up to 35 points by the end of the third quarter to help Sycamore jump ahead 54-37. Lundquist scored 13 points in the quarter, with Hasz adding a soft runner for two points and freshman Josie Lundquist converting two free throws. Abby scored all nine Rochelle points in the fourth quarter.
“Abby was getting into her rhythm early and when that happens, she has more confidence in her shots,” Rowan said. “We were able to get into transition more often, and when we’re moving in transition, it’s tougher for teams to key in on her because their first instinct is to protect the rim. She was able to find openings in transition and she used her screens well.”
