ROCHELLE — Despite their limited varsity roster, Rochelle’s Lady Hub bowlers made the most of their Interstate 8 Conference opener against the Sycamore Spartans on Monday.

The Lady Hubs posted multiple solid scores across their three-game contest with the Spartans. Junior Alyssa Schwanert led Rochelle with a 489 series and a high score of 186, while senior Kiya Porter totaled a 444 series in the team’s 3,031-2,382 loss to Sycamore. Maddie Lathrop recorded a match-high 636 series with a high score of 255 during the second game.

“I’m already seeing improvements in the little time we’ve had to work together,” head coach Eric Widick said. “The girls are making a lot of progress. Alyssa was dropping her shoulder early in the match, but we talked about it and she was able to throw the ball with more confidence.”

Sycamore took the first game 966-782 despite a series-high 172 score from Porter. Maddie Lathrop’s 199 and Maxine Lathrop’s 179 paced the Spartans in the opening game. Sycamore claimed the second game 1,009-758, with Schwanert rolling 186 and freshman Faith Adams shooting a series-high 178 score for the Lady Hubs. Kiki Wittenberg added 188 for the Spartans.

“Kiya has a tendency of wanting to rush, but when she stays back and slows down, she comes through the ball and stays straight,” Widick said. “We talked about slowing down and that really helped her out. I’m really impressed with Faith so far. She’s one of our most consistent throwers and when she’s on, she’ll roll the ball right into the pocket and she’ll pick up spares.”

Sycamore closed the match with a 1,056-842 victory in the third game. Schwanert’s 165 and Porter’s 159 were the high scores for Rochelle, while Wittenberg’s 220 propelled the Spartans in the final game. Adams finished with a 406 series and junior Carly Summers totaled 375 with a high score of 140. Rochelle will host LaSalle-Peru on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m.

“Carly has a new ball this year and we’re working on getting her to come through the ball and drive the ball down the lane so it hooks,” Widick said. “We’re also working on improving her stride toward the foul line. It’ll take some time because there’s a lot for her to think about.”
