The Rochelle varsity boys tennis team crowned two champions during the Hub Varsity Invitational at Rochelle Township High School this past Saturday, with seniors Noah Griffith and Kevin Zheng each bringing home titles in singles competition. Dixon took the team championship with 18 points while Rochelle finished fourth with 14 points.

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle varsity boys tennis team crowned two champions during the Hub Varsity Invitational at Rochelle Township High School this past Saturday, with seniors Noah Griffith and Kevin Zheng each bringing home titles in singles competition. Dixon took the team championship with 18 points while Rochelle finished fourth with 14 points.

Griffith took first place at No. 1 singles, going 4-0 over four matches. Griffith bested Princeton’s Jayden Pinter by a score of 6-2, 6-2 before taking down Mendota’s Preston Lewis 6-3, 6-2. Griffith defeated Dixon’s Jason Rugh 6-2, 6-4 in his third match before winning over Newman Central Catholic’s Brady Moran 6-2, 6-2 for the four-match sweep.

Zheng also went 4-0 on Saturday to finish first at No. 2 singles. Zheng took down Newman Central Catholic’s Kyle Tunink 6-4, 6-3 before beating Princeton’s Austin Phillips 6-3, 6-3. Zheng took two straight three-set tiebreakers to seal his sweep, edging Mendota’s Zach Rinaldo (3-6, 6-2, 10-1) before winning against Dixon’s Ryan Lawton (2-6, 6-3, 10-8).

Sophomore Sean Flanagan and junior Diego Lopez took fourth place at No. 3 doubles for Rochelle, going 1-3 with their lone win coming against Newman Central Catholic’s Dean Ellorando and Blake Gockel in three sets (7-6(4), 3-6, 10-8). Juniors Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia finished fifth at No. 1 doubles (0-4), while senior Jesus Nava and junior Emilio Nava were fifth at No. 2 doubles (0-4).
