ROCHELLE — Garrett Glosser hadn’t been part of a conference victory in any of his first three years with the Hubs golf team. But Glosser and his Rochelle teammates broke that streak on Tuesday, with the Hubs shooting 172 to beat the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers (186) in Rochelle’s “Senior Night” matchup.
The Hubs have been surging over their last few matches, having earned a victory over Amboy and a draw against the Ottawa Pirates. Rochelle (5-7-1) continued to climb the ladder on Tuesday, with Glosser shooting 39 to lead all Hub players in the win.
“It was nice to have the feeling of winning on Senior Night,” Glosser said. “It’s nice to have players who can step up and anchor our team… I was keeping the ball straight and I wasn’t nervous or anything. I just went out there and played.”
Junior Hayden Jones shot 40 in Rochelle’s No. 3 varsity spot, and Jones showed no rust after missing a few matches due to health reasons. He said some practice over the weekend helped sharpen up for Tuesday’s match, and he said he was happy to help his seniors bring home the win.
“I felt good coming back,” Jones said. “It was nice to have a little break… My approach shots were helping me hit the greens and my putting was on the whole time… I think we’re going to beat some teams coming up and I think our confidence is much higher than it was last year.”
Senior Noah Griffith (45) and freshman Megan Thiravong (48) rounded out Rochelle’s top four varsity scores on Tuesday. The Hubs finished 10th out of 10 teams in the Northern Illinois Big 12 last season, but the Rochelle players are looking to build momentum entering the conference tournament at the end of the month.
“It was pretty special to win on Senior Night even though I didn’t play my best,” Griffith said. “We’re progressing and I was really happy to get the team win… It’s a big confidence booster since we didn’t have many wins last year.”
