BYRON — There were plenty of medals to go around for the Rochelle cross country team on Wednesday, with several girls bringing home awards after excelling in the varsity and open races at the Byron Invitational.
The Lady Hubs finished second out of six schools, their best performance by placement this season. Junior Katherine Bakken remained Rochelle’s top girl, taking second out of 95 runners to medal with a time of 20:03. Senior Claire Plapp medaled as well, placing ninth with a time of 21:44.
Senior Hannah Cruz finished 13th with a time of 22:40 to earn Rochelle’s third varsity medal. Three more girls received awards for their performances in the open race including senior Rhylie Erdman, who placed fourth with a time of 23:25. Freshman Heidi Cruz (eighth in 25:14) and junior Abby Wagner (10th in 25:54) also medaled for the Lady Hubs.
The Hubs finished fourth out of six teams, with sophomore Santi Cordoba placing 14th with a time of 18:11. Sophomores Uzziel Zarate took 18th with a time of 19:15, and sophomore Diego Escobar landed one spot behind Zarate, placing 19th with a time of 19:17.
Sophomore Tucker Louis finished 21st with a time of 20:20 to record Rochelle’s fourth top-25 finish on the day. Both the Hubs and Lady Hubs will race in Sterling’s Rock River Run this weekend before journeying to the Matt Walter Invitational hosted by Genoa-Kingston on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
