STREAMWOOD — The Rochelle Little League 10-11 Boys All-Star Team won two consecutive games this past weekend to finish 2-1 in the Illinois Little League Sub-State Pool B Championship and qualify for the State Championship in Freeport this coming weekend.
After dropping their opening game against Streator this past Friday, the Rochelle boys took down Moline and Tri Cities on Saturday and Sunday to seal their spot in the State Championship. Rochelle defeated Moline 10-0 on Saturday before sneaking past Tri Cities by a score of 2-0 on Sunday.
Moline
Ethan Goodwin singled before Grant Gensler reached on a fielder’s choice and Elijah Harley hit an RBI double to plate Gensler and give Rochelle a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rochelle extended its lead to 5-0 with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Goodwin walked before Gensler reached on a bunt.
Goodwin scored on an error, and Harley’s RBI single scored Gensler. Brode Metzger singled to keep Rochelle going, with Harley scoring on a wild pitch before Carson Lewis singled to score Metzger.
Xavier Villalobos walked to ignite a four-run outburst by Rochelle in the bottom of the fourth inning, which gave Rochelle a 9-0 advantage. Villalobos scored when Gensler reached on an error with one out, and Harley drew a hit-by-pitch before Brandyn Metzger reached on a fielder’s choice, Brode Metzger reached on an error and Lewis singled.
Breydan Andrews singled for Rochelle in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Villalobos reached on a fielder’s choice before scoring when Gensler reached on an error. Gensler threw all five innings for Rochelle, allowing just three Moline hits to earn the win.
Tri Cities
Harley doubled for Rochelle in the top of the first inning, but Rochelle didn’t get on the board until Andrews singled and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Goodwin in the top of the second inning to give Rochelle a 1-0 lead. Lewis singled and scored on an RBI double by Brody Bruns in the top of the fourth inning to put Rochelle ahead 2-0.
Gensler, Harley, Brandyn Metzger and Brode Metzger hit four straight singles in the top of the fifth inning, but Rochelle was unable to add to its lead after Gensler was tagged out at home and two pop-ups led to outs. Brandyn Metzger was dominant on the pitcher’s mound, tossing all six innings for a complete game while holding Tri Cities to only two hits.
