Sycamore nips Lady Hubs in physical conference battle

SYCAMORE — Things got a little chippy Tuesday night when the Lady Hubs varsity basketball team traveled to Sycamore High School for a Northern Illinois Big 12 game against the Lady Spartans.
In a hard-fought game where the officials let the girls battle it out, the Lady Hubs trailed by just four points entering the fourth quarter. But the Lady Spartans hung on long enough to top the Rochelle squad, winning by a score of 54-46.
“It was extremely tight throughout the game,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “I don’t think it stretched out to more than seven or eight points the entire game. The girls did a phenomenal job executing offensively and defensively.”
Sophomore Abby Lundquist and Sycamore freshman Kylie Feuerbach stole the show Tuesday night, with the two girls combining for 52 of the 100 points scored in the game. Feuerbach led the Lady Spartans with 30, while Lundquist put in 22 on 8-of-16 shooting for Rochelle.

“They have a phenomenal freshman who can put the ball in the hole whenever she pleases,” Rowan said. “[Kylie] created mismatch problems for anybody out there… She did a great job of attacking the basket and making 3-point shots. She’s a very talented scorer.”
Sycamore led the Lady Hubs 11-6 after the first quarter, with Rochelle outscoring the Lady Spartans 10-8 in the second quarter to cut the Sycamore lead to three at halftime. As the game grew tighter, the level of intensity from both sides picked up dramatically, with both teams fighting through contact on each end of the floor.
“The refs let them play it out,” Rowan said. “We played through all the contact defensively and we made every shot for them a tough shot… Our kids did a great job sticking together when the game got chippy.”
The Lady Spartans added one point to their lead after three quarters, but the Lady Hubs responded with a 6-1 run to start the fourth quarter to jump ahead 40-39 with 5:34 left in the game. Feuerbach and junior Kate Majerus teamed up for seven straight Sycamore points after the lead change to swing the game back in the home team’s favor.
Rochelle came within four points three times during the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but Majerus splashed home a pair of free throws each time to increase the Lady Spartan lead to six and help her team ice the win.
Junior Jacie Wyatt had 10 points and three rebounds in Tuesday night’s game, while senior Abby Kerns and junior Morgan Baker each chipped in four points, with Baker adding four steals. Seniors Kellee Parker and Haley Rawles combined for 10 rebounds.
The Rochelle girls fall to 8-11 on the season, and they will gear up for a road game with LaSalle-Peru on Friday.
