Metzger finishes first, Pavlak takes third

ROCKFORD — The Rochelle Hub wrestling team scored 64 points and finished tied for 11th place out of 19 schools at the Rockford East Freshman Invitational on Saturday.

Brandyn Metzger led the Hubs with 29 points, finishing first in the 160-pound bracket with a 4-0 record. Metzger scored three consecutive falls over Niles (Notre Dame)’s Quinn Kovac, Grayslake Central’s Nicholas Timmons and McHenry’s Jacob Pletcher. Metzger faced Warren Township’s Dylan Soto for the championship, winning the bout with an 11-0 major decision.

Jack Pavlak took third in the 170-pound bracket with 18 points and a 3-1 record. Pavlak won by fall over Rockford East’s Ivan Ledezma before defeating Niles (Notre Dame)’s Billy Kokalias with an 11-2 major decision. Pavlak faced Huntley’s Ari Fiebag in the semifinals, losing by fall before earning a pin against Huntley’s EJ Aldape in the third-place consolation match.

Damon Cagle placed sixth in the 220-point bracket with a 2-2 record and eight points. Cagle scored a 7-1 decision over Dundee-Crown’s Christopher Ronquillo and one fall over Dundee-Crown’s Arturo Gamino. Cagle fell to Moline’s Bennet Gorgal in the fifth-place bout.

Weylin Nay scored seven points and finished with a 2-2 record in the 120-pound bracket. Nay won by fall over Algonquin (Jacobs)’s Hugo Prado before winning by fall against Niles (Notre Dame)’s Brayden Quigley in the consolation bracket. Santiago Pacheco totaled two points in the 132-pound bracket, notching 12-7 decision against Niles (Notre Dame)’s Corey Cisneroz. Jaime Christensen competed in the 100-pound bracket, finishing 0-2 over two matches.
