ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity basketball team had only one All-Conference Honorable Mention from the Interstate 8 last season. That number doubled this season, with seniors Sofia Lenkaitis and Afi Gati each receiving Honorable Mentions from the conference.

Lenkaitis, who received an Honorable Mention for the second straight season, averaged 7.7 points per game and led the Lady Hubs with 22 steals on defense. Gati made her presence felt on the interior, averaging a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game with 15 steals defensively.

“It’s nice to see that my hard work was recognized for the second year in a row,” Lenkaitis said. “Basketball is a team sport and winning is always possible when it’s treated like a team sport. I wanted us to grow as a team and I feel like we achieved that… I enjoyed being with my teammates, competing against them in practice and playing alongside them during games… I felt that we were unstoppable when we won games because we played for each other.”

Gati

Lenkaitis and Gati led Rochelle (3-10) during its Senior Night victory over Morris, with Lenkaitis scoring a team-high 12 points and Gati totaling 10 rebounds. Lenkaitis made the most field goals on the team this season, hitting 37 shots including 15 shots from 3-point range. Lenkaitis and Gati are two of four seniors graduating from the Lady Hub varsity team this season.

“I’m very shocked and honored to receive the award,” Gati said. “I think I improved my confidence on the floor. I loved being a member of the Lady Hub family for the past four years. I loved how we always had each other’s back through the good times and the bad times. I’m shocked with how fast the last four years went but I couldn’t have asked for a better team.”
