ROCHELLE — It was nearly a clean sweep for the Lady Hub tennis team when Rochelle hosted Rockford Christian for nonconference play Monday afternoon.

The Lady Hubs dominated the Royal Lions in doubles, surrendering only one point across all three matches. Junior Emma Hicks played a perfect singles match against her opponent, and the Rochelle netters earned their most decisive victory of the season, a 4-1 win over Rockford Christian to reach 5-11 overall. Rochelle has won four of its last seven matches.

“We’ve been a lot more focused in practice and we’ve been able to get a lot more done,” junior Jordin Dickey said. “We’re giving our all and we’re working really well together… We’ve played some tough teams this year and we’ve beaten a couple of them, and I know we’ll have a lot more confidence going into the postseason because we know there will be some good teams.”

Hicks had no trouble on the No. 2 singles court, defeating Taylor Powell 6-0, 6-0 for Rochelle’s fourth point of the match. Senior Anna Guevara nearly sealed a perfect day for the Lady Hubs, splitting two sets before falling against Zoe Antczak 6-3, 6-7, 5-10 at No. 1 singles.

Rochelle put its first two points of the match on the board simultaneously, with Dickey and teammate MeLisa Young sweeping Savannah Jackson and Gracie McMahon 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 1 doubles court while senior Sawyer McGee and junior Sylvia Hasz won 6-0, 6-0 over Cameron Groenwald and Elle Jones at No. 2 doubles. Juniors Josie Lundquist and Megan Thompson cruised over Gia Buscema and Katie Kirschmann at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-1, 6-0.

“Our communication is really good,” Dickey said. “Our serves have improved a lot as well.”

The Lady Hubs will play the Interstate 8 Conference Varsity Championship at Ottawa Township High School on Saturday, Oct. 10 before beginning the IHSA 1A Rochelle Sectional at home on Friday, Oct. 16. Rochelle has two dual meets remaining against Belvidere and Freeport.
