MORRIS — Rochelle juniors Isaac Green and Luke Stecker received their first varsity starts of the 2017 golf season Tuesday evening, when the Hubs traveled to Morris Country Club for a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference battle with the Morris Redskins.
Senior Noah Griffith led the Hubs with a team-low score of 39, and senior Garrett Glosser added a 42 after shooting a 43 against Dixon and Freeport this past Thursday. But Rochelle was unable to take down the Redskins, who totaled 166 strokes to pick up the varsity victory over the Hubs, who finished with 183 strokes.
Green recorded a 54 in Rochelle’s fifth varsity slot, and Stecker scored a 51 out of the No. 6 spot. The boys said they were excited to showcase their skills at the varsity level, and they’re aiming to continue improving as the season progresses.
“I was kind of nervous going out there but it felt good,” said Stecker, who played on Rochelle’s junior varsity team in 2016. “Hopefully I can keep improving so I can stay on varsity… My chipping and my putting will be the biggest things.”
“It felt really different,” Green added. “There’s much more pressure on varsity… Hopefully I can shoot lower than I did last year because I shot really high. My putting needs some work.”
Junior Hayden Jones (51) and Brady Shank (51) rounded out the Rochelle varsity team’s top scores on Tuesday. The Hubs drop to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.

Freshman Megan Thiravong turned in a 40 to lead the Rochelle junior varsity golf team in a 196-228 loss to the Morris Redskins on Tuesday. Thiravong’s score was the Hubs’ second-lowest overall behind Griffith’s 39.
Freshman Reese Kirk finished with a 62, while junior Connor Lenkaitis and sophomore Logan Ortega each scored 63. Freshmen Sam Hacaga (64) and Ben Rankin (69) rounded out the junior varsity scores on Tuesday.
