Rochelle finishes 0-3 over three games in Paris

Rochelle Little League’s 10U Baseball All-Stars battled in the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament in Paris over the weekend. Rochelle faced Mendota, River Forest and Ridge Beverly Little League in the tournament, finishing 0-3 over three games.

Rochelle finishes 0-3 over three games in Paris

PARIS — Rochelle Little League’s 10U Baseball All-Stars battled in the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament in Paris, Illinois over the weekend. Rochelle faced Mendota, River Forest and Ridge Beverly Little League in the tournament, finishing 0-3 over three games.

The team includes Brecken Bruns, Chase Olsen, Cody Cox, Connor Isley, Cooper Harris, Griffin Rutledge, Gwen Good, Jacob Chadwick, Max Harley, Michael Vaughn, Paul Olszewski, Quade Dickey and Tanner Dixon. The team is coached by John Cox, John Vaughn and Jeff Dickey.

Mendota

Rochelle’s state tournament run began with a 3-2 loss against Mendota on Saturday afternoon. Chase Olsen started on the mound for the 10U All-Stars, throwing three and two-thirds innings while striking out seven batters and allowing only three hits. Tanner Dixon and Jacob Chadwick combined to throw the final two and one-third innings for Rochelle, striking out three batters.

Rochelle took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring after Michael Vaughn and Quade Dickey smacked back-to-back singles, which preceded an RBI double to left field from Chase Olsen. Mendota evened the score at 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the third inning.

Max Harley and Tanner Dixon laced back-to-back singles to start the Rochelle offense in the bottom of the third inning, where a fielder’s choice grounder from Brecken Bruns led to an RBI and a 2-1 advantage for the 10U All-Stars. Mendota took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, however, scoring two runs on two singles, one fielder’s choice grounder and a passed ball.

River Forest

Rochelle faced River Forest on Saturday evening, falling 10-9 despite tallying five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brecken Bruns pitched four innings and struck out three batters, while Cody Cox went 2-for-2 with two runs and Chase Olsen went 2-for-3 with an RBI on offense.

River Forest held a 2-0 lead after scratching two runs on two singles and a groundout in the bottom of the first inning. Quade Dickey’s RBI triple sparked the Rochelle offense in the top of the second inning, where the 10U All-Stars tied the game after Chase Olsen’s RBI double to left field. A three-run triple in the bottom of the second inning gave River Forest a 5-2 advantage.

Back-to-back run-scoring doubles and an RBI single pushed River Forest ahead 9-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Rochelle earned one run back in the top of the fourth inning, where Jacob Chadwick reached on an RBI infield single to the shortstop that plated Brecken Bruns.

Tanner Dixon and Gwen Good drew bases-loaded walks to ignite Rochelle’s five-run rally in the top of the fifth inning. With Rochelle trailing 9-5, Brecken Bruns cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field that brought the 10U All-Stars within one run. Rochelle tied the score at 9-9 after Michael Vaughn slapped an RBI single to center in the top of the sixth inning. River Forest sealed its win with one run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ridge Beverly

Rochelle’s state tournament run concluded with a 16-11 loss against Ridge Beverly on Sunday afternoon. Jacob Chadwick went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Rochelle offense, while Brecken Bruns went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Connor Isley totaled three RBIs.

Ridge Beverly surged ahead 4-0 after scoring four runs on three singles, two doubles and one triple in the top of the first inning. Rochelle responded with one run on an RBI groundout from Griffin Rutledge in the bottom of the first inning. Ridge Beverly’s lead over Rochelle grew to 6-1 after the team tallied two runs on two singles and one double in the top of the second inning.

The 10U All-Stars fought back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, where Gwen Good laced an RBI single to first base and Brecken Bruns followed with an RBI groundout in the next at-bat. Jacob Chadwick capped off the three-run frame with an RBI single to second base. Rochelle tied the game after Connor Isley’s two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ridge Beverly’s offense exploded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring 10 runs to break the game wide open. The team compiled four singles, two triples, one double and four walks to take a 16-6 lead over the 10U All-Stars, who answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brecken Bruns recorded an RBI single before Jacob Chadwick belted a two-run double to left.

Rochelle concluded the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, where Connor Isley drove home Michael Vaughn with an RBI groundout and Cooper Harris plated Chase Olsen with an RBI single to right field. Rochelle finished with 18 hits on offense in the game.
