Rochelle Little League hosted its Major League Baseball City Championship series this week, with No. 1 seed VFW defeating No. 3 seed Lions in two straight games to win the tournament for the fourth consecutive season. VFW opened the series with an 8-3 victory over Lions on Tuesday before beating Lions 14-1 on Wednesday to claim the championship.

ROCHELLE — Rochelle Little League hosted its Major League Baseball City Championship series this week, with No. 1 seed VFW defeating No. 3 seed Lions in two straight games to win the tournament for the fourth consecutive season. VFW opened the series with an 8-3 victory over Lions on Tuesday before beating Lions 14-1 on Wednesday to claim the championship.

VFW includes Connor Lewis, Bobby Tourdot, Jonathan Andrist, Kasin Avila, Tyler Gensler, Josh Lassiter, Brock Heller, Kolton Cragin, Elijah Good, Ryley Ginn and Tyson Pavlak. The team is coached by Joe Tourdot, Jim Gensler and Chris Lewis.

Lions includes Luke Chadwick, Bo Lundquist, John Chadwick, Brayden Harley, Tyler Etes, Jack Evans, Preston Borris, Brayden Bowers, Joey Chadwick, Mikey Chadwick and Owen Miller. The boys are coached by Paul Chadwick and Mike Chadwick.

Tuesday

VFW took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Gensler walked and scored on an RBI triple from Josh Lassiter, who then scored on a passed ball. Brayden Harley slapped an opposite-field single to score Bo Lundquist for Lions in the top of the third inning.

Connor Lewis walked and scored on a passed ball to give VFW a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Lions tied the game at 3-3 on Joey Chadwick’s two-run single that scored Brayden Bowers and Mikey Chadwick in the top of the fourth inning. Gensler walked and scored on a passed ball to break the tie and put VFW ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

VFW sealed Game 1 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lewis singled and scored on an RBI single from Jonathan Andrist to make it a 5-3 game. Gensler then singled to score Andrist and Lassiter cleared the bases with a two-run single to score Kasin Avila and Gensler. Bobby Tourdot threw five innings and earned the win for VFW, striking out five batters.

Wednesday

Jonathan Andrist fired a no-hitter for VFW, striking out 11 batters and allowing only one run. VFW went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning on RBI singles from Bobby Tourdot and Tyler Gensler. Lions earned one run back in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Brayden Harley that scored Luke Chadwick, who drew a walk to open the frame.

Connor Lewis reached on an error to score Brock Heller and give VFW a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning. VFW added two runs in the top of the third inning after Kasin Avila singled and scored on a passed ball before Kolton Cragin brought Gensler home on an RBI single.

VFW broke Game 2 open with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Tourdot hit an inside-the-park home run to make it a 6-1 game, while Andrist walked and scored on a passed ball five at-bats later. Batting out of the No. 9 hole, Tyson Pavlak delivered a three-run double down the left-field line to score Avila, Craigen and Elijah Good and put VFW ahead 10-1.

VFW closed the game out with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Avila hit an RBI single to score Tourdot before Gensler brought Andrist and Avila home on an inside-the-park home run.
