Hub and Lady Hub teams celebrate seniors with wins over Rockets

Senior Night was successful for the Rochelle Hub and Lady Hub track and field teams Thursday evening, when Rock Falls came to town for a head-to-head nonconference matchup. Both teams emerged victorious, with the Hubs winning 75-61 and the Lady Hubs defeating the Rockets 72-56. Rochelle seniors Afi Gati, Kiya Porter, Heidi Cruz, Oscar Aguirre, Trevor Goodwin, Sterling Devers and Aiden Seldal were all recognized before the meet.

ROCHELLE — Senior Night was successful for the Rochelle Hub and Lady Hub track and field teams Thursday evening, when Rock Falls came to town for a head-to-head nonconference matchup. Both teams emerged victorious, with the Hubs winning 75-61 and the Lady Hubs defeating the Rockets 72-56. Rochelle seniors Afi Gati, Kiya Porter, Heidi Cruz, Oscar Aguirre, Trevor Goodwin, Sterling Devers and Aiden Seldal were all recognized before the meet.

“I’m happy that we made it through our season and our seniors had the chance to compete,” Lady Hub head coach Alison Vrana said. “All of our seniors set personal records tonight and I’m happy that we’ve been able to see the seniors get better as our season has progressed.”

“I’m proud of our seniors and how hard they’ve worked over the last four years,” Hub head coach Dale Bergeson said. “They compete every day and I’m happy they’ll be able to move on after high school and we’ll be able to finish our season strong with them in our program.”

Lady Hubs

Junior Liberty Hayes contributed to three Rochelle victories on Thursday, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.91 seconds while assisting the Lady Hubs to victories in the 400-meter relay and the 800-meter relay with respective times of 57.69 and 1:55.14. Junior Teagan Meyers won the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.59 and secured victories in both the high jump with a clearance of 1.47 meters and the triple jump with a distance of 9.23 meters.

Senior Afi Gati swept the throwing events, winning both the shot put with a distance of 10.71 meters and the discus with a distance of 28.99 meters. Freshman Alivia Henkel took home the pole vault victory with a height of 2.44 meters and sophomore Baylie Sutton placed second in the long jump with a distance of 3.42 meters. Junior Sara Johnson finished second in both the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:13.50 and the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 21.19.

Sophomores Ahtziri Zepeda and Yuelma Ortiz stepped up in the distance events. Zepeda won the 800-meter run in 3:03.94 and Ortiz took second in the 3200-meter run in 13:29.54.

Hubs

Junior Zach Sanford secured both throwing events on Thursday, winning the shot put and the discus with personal records of 13.59 meters and 36.36 meters, respectively. Junior Ryan Simmons brought home the high jump victory with a clearance of 1.68 meters and junior Luke Orlikowski locked down the triple jump win with a distance of 11.06 meters. Senior Oscar Aguirre took second in the discus (35.36 meters) and third in the shot put (11.65 meters).

Rochelle won both the 3200-meter relay with a time of 10:30.33 and the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:45.15. Sophomore Christian Harding recorded a time of 58.68 to win the 400-meter dash and junior Ethan Wells placed second in both the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.67 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.02. Junior Hayden Smith won the 3200-meter run in 12:36.43 and freshman Abel Huerta finished second in the 1600-meter run in 5:41.54.
