The Rochelle Hub varsity wrestling team sent six athletes to the IWCOA Fresh-Soph Sterling Sectional on Sunday, with three individuals qualifying for the state meet including sophomore Tommy Tourdot as well as freshmen Kaiden Morris and Joseph Nadig. The IWCOA Fresh-Soph State Championship will begin on Saturday, March 12 in Springfield. The state championship meet will conclude on Sunday, March 13.

STERLING — The Rochelle Hub varsity wrestling team sent six athletes to the IWCOA Fresh-Soph Sterling Sectional on Sunday, with three individuals qualifying for the state meet including sophomore Tommy Tourdot as well as freshmen Kaiden Morris and Joseph Nadig. The IWCOA Fresh-Soph State Championship will begin on Saturday, March 12 in Springfield. The state championship meet will conclude on Sunday, March 13.

Nadig (3-0) went unbeaten to win the 113-point sectional title. Nadig won by fall over Sterling’s Andrew Magnuson in the quarterfinals before scoring an 8-0 major decision against Rockford Auburn’s Joseph Young. Nadig won by fall over Stillman Valley’s Henry Hildreth for the title.

Morris (3-0) also won three straight bouts to claim the 220-pound sectional title. Morris outlasted DeKalb’s Lamar Bradley with a 3-1 sudden victory before beating Stockton’s Michael Haas with a 3-1 decision in the semifinals. Morris topped Geneseo’s Brayden Franzen with a 7-2 decision to win the title and clinch a berth in the state tournament at the Bank of Springfield Center.

Tourdot (3-1) overcame a loss against DeKalb’s Eduardo Castro in the quarterfinals of the 101-pound sectional bracket. After conceding a 3-2 decision, Tourdot rallied for a 16-0 technical fall over Richmond-Burton’s Kristian Gersch before scoring a third-period fall against Dixon’s Jacob Renkes. Tourdot won by fall over Richmond-Burton’s Kyan Gunderson for third place.

Sophomore Leo Stoffel went 2-2 over four matches in the 160-pound bracket, winning by fall over Moline’s TaVontae Flowers and Orion’s Kaden Edmonds. Freshman Jack Pavlak finished 1-2 over three matches in the 170-pound bracket, winning by fall over LaSalle-Peru’s Gage Swiskoski. Sophomore Riley Damask ended the tournament with an 0-2 record over two matches in the 120-pound bracket.
