The City of Rochelle will begin alley reconstruction work this summer, City Street Department Superintendent Tim Isley said May 15. 

Residents of Lincoln Manor have spent the past two months making sleeping mats from recycled plastic shopping bags to donate to Miss Carly's, a non-profit dedicated to the homeless in Rockford.

The Flagg-Rochelle Public Library kicked off its Summer Reading program this week. The theme this year is Read, Renew, Repeat. The library has hosted a summer reading program for over 50 years to offer area kids a place to go and activities while they’re on summer break from school.

On Tuesday, O'Reilly Auto Parts in Rochelle hosted its yearly Customer Appreciation Day at its 144 May Mart Drive location. Staff at the location offered free lunch to customers.

On May 31 at 2:56 p.m. Ahlam M. Elthair, 38, of DeKalb was cited for speeding. He signed a promise to comply and was given a June 21 Rochelle court date.

On May 31 at approximately 6:09 p.m. deputies responded to the 11,000 block of East Lincoln Lane in Rochelle in response to a domestic battery. After an initial investigation, deputies placed Michael K. Holland, 55, of Rochelle, under arrest for domestic battery. Additionally, during this investigation, deputies placed William W. Clark II, 44, of Rochelle, under arrest for an Ogle County warrant (possession of methamphetamine) no bond warrant, and resisting a peace officer. Holland and Clark were both transported to the Ogle County Jail pending an appearance before a Judge. All subjects are presumed innocent.

Senior left-hander Dylan Whaley said his throwing arm felt stronger than it had felt all season when he prepared to take the mound for the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team during an Interstate 8 Conference matchup against the talented Morris Redskins on April 24.

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team will have a different look without senior catcher Ella Alfano anchoring the defense from behind the dish.

Senior Brock Metzger was named the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, where Metzger finished second in both innings pitched (30) and strikeouts (30) while ranking second in hits (22) and third in batting average (.265).

No. He was to devote his life to ensuring that his congregation had the tools to survive as Christians in a confusing world. 

Illinois faces a critical shortage of teachers equipped to work with English learners. According to the 2023-2024 educator shortage report, Bilingual/ESL and Bilingual Special Education teachers all had vacancy rates above the state average. Indeed, more than 420 positions were unfilled, with 230 filled by other means such as hiring substitutes or retired teachers and increasing class sizes.

The Rochelle Township High School Art program recently wrapped up its 2023-2024 year, with students boasting nearly 50 awards from competitions including the annual RTHS Art Show, the I-8 Conference competition, the Rockford Art Museum Young Artist Show, the Kishwaukee College Juried High School Art Show, and the Northern Illinois University Art Invitational. 

City Engineer Sam Tesreau has announced the closure of 9th Street between 10th Avenue where the street jogs at 9th Street and 10th Avenue near Tilton School, beginning Tuesday at 7 a.m. June 3 through the end of the day on Thursday, June 6.

The Rochelle Chamber of Commerce recently presented its Lawn of the Week award for the week of May 25 to Kenny Dougherty. He received a sign and a $25 Rochelle ACE Hardware gift card, presented by Rochelle Ace Hardware Manager Jesse Lopez.

On May 28 at 7:26 a.m. Anjolie E. Hall, 18, of Rochelle was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant and transferred.

On May 28 at 12:36 p.m. the Ogle County Sheriff's Office responded to a possible crash on Illinois Route 251, approximately a quarter mile north of Lindenwood Road. Further investigation showed the driver, Bobby Simmons, 63, of Mt. Morris, had suffered a medical emergency.  He was taken to Swedish American Hospital by Stillman Valley Fire.  Also assisting at the scene were Illinois State Police and Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Department personnel. No accident occurred; the vehicle pulled off of the roadway.

Ruth Irene Dalton, 91, formerly of Dixon, IL, passed away Friday, May 31, 2024 at the Dixon Rehab and Healthcare in Dixon, Illinois surrounded by her family.

Annette "Nettie" Ann Kary, age, 76, formerly of Rochelle, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024 in Eagan, Minnesota. 

The Rochelle News-Leader selected Rochelle Township High School senior graduates Parker Lenkaitis and Alivia Henkel as the 2023-24 Scholar-Athlete Award winners. Both student-athletes were presented with awards during the RTHS Honors Night in early May.

Local charitable organization From the Heart has established a Queen of Hearts drawing that will take place weekly on Thursday evenings at Luna starting June 13.

On May 24 at 10:31 p.m. Fernando Perez Avitia, 37, of Rochelle was arrested for domestic battery and transferred. He was given a June 28 Ogle County court date.

At its meeting Tuesday, the Rochelle City Council discussed a potential urban park that it may erect in the future at 517 W. 4th Ave., where it recently demolished a building that was the former site of Vinny's Barbershop.

Spring Lake Pool’s grand opening for the 2024 season will see a short delay, a press release from the Flagg-Rochelle Community Park District said.

Lady Hub senior Kyra Bivins leaned on her athletic background when she decided to take up track and field for the first time during her junior year at Rochelle Township High School.
